Is Hiring A Wedding Magician Worth It?

Let’s be honest when you are planning your wedding there are a lot of things to think about the dress, the venue even the date. However once all the really important things are organised most brides and grooms think about entertainment.

Entertainment at your wedding is a something to seriously think about. The right entertainment can create a buzzing atmosphere and get everyone to remember your special day for all the right reasons. However the wrong entertainment can be really detrimental and kill the atmosphere you are trying so hard to create.

There are lots of options when it comes to wedding entertainment. Bands, singers, comedians, magicians, illusionists, impressionists. The list goes on and on. So the question is whether hiring a magician for your wedding is worth it. Obviously we are biased and the simple solution would be for us to say a massive YES. However that would make this blog a little short. So instead we are going to take a little time and really work out if a magician is a worth while investment.

First of all remember that your wedding should be a reflection of you. In other words have things at your wedding that you enjoy. At the end of the day this is your special day and you are the most important people there. If you hate magic then hiring a magician probably isn’t the best option.

Having said that it’s also important to think about the experience you want your guests to have. We had a strange phone call the other day. A lady called us up to book us for her wedding. She told us on the phone that she hates magic however she had seen us at another wedding and all the guests talked about our performance. She wanted her guests to have that same experience. So even though she wasn’t bothered about magic, she really wanted to book us to perform at her wedding. The important thing to take from this is sometimes you need to think about the guests at your wedding even though it’s your special day.

You also want to think about what else you have going on at your wedding. If you have booked a million other things then maybe booking a magician as well isn't the best idea. Sometimes less is more and you really don’t want your wedding to turn into a circus. Magic is a great addition to a wedding but if you have booked a bunch of stuff already then maybe give it a miss. If you have a list of lots of things you want to book the best option is to carefully look over everything and whittle it down to the things that you care about the most. If magic is on that list that’s awesome! However if not then that’s okay as well!

Do you have a theme for your wedding? Recently we have performed at a lot of Greatest Showman Themed Wedding. As you can imagine hiring a magician and even an illusionist for that sort of wedding just works. It fits the theme perfectly. However there are other themes where magic just wouldn’t work. For example a Mamma Mia themed wedding (very popular by the way) wouldn’t benefit from a magician. Instead they would be better having an ABBA Tribute Band. So the question is do you have a theme for your wedding and would magic be a good fit?

What type of magic would you be considering? There are two types of magic that we perform at weddings - stage shows and close up magic. Close up magic is when a magician mingles from group to group performing magic close up and personal. Stage magic is when a magician stands in front of everyone and performs to the entire group. Stage magic is more expensive and you need more space. However it really gives people the WOW Factor and is very memorable. Close up magic costs a lot less and is more personal. There is a time and place for each type of performance but be prepared to spend more money if you want a stage show at your wedding. On the subject of money the final consideration is what your budget is for your wedding. If you are trying to put things together on a shoestring budget magic might not be the best option. After all there are other things you want to spend your money on. However if have more of a budget then magic is a great option. We find that we get a lot of last minute bookings. People find they have a bit of money left and they want to spend in on something slightly unusual (see what we did there!). Regardless, budget will be a deciding factor as to whether hiring a magician is worth it. If you would like to read a blog about how to plan a wedding on a show string budget CLICK HERE

So there you have it! The bottom line is we think hiring a magician is absolutely the right thing to do for your wedding. However we are biased! Ultimately do what makes you happy - after all it is your special day.
