When is the best time to have a close up magician perform at YOUR wedding?
So you are getting married - congratulations! Also you have decided to book a close up magician - great decision! However when do you ask the close up magician to perform? You see close up magic is unique as it is entertainment that serves a purpose beyond just entertaining people. What time you book the magician depends on the reason you want a close up magician in the first place. There are four different times during your wedding when close up magic will work really well.
1 - During the photos / champagne reception
The photographs are normally taken straight after the Ceremony and there is typically a lot of dead time. Only immediate family are involved and everyone else is standing around waiting to be fed! Lots of clients book us to perform during the photos and the champagne reception before everyone goes into the Wedding Breakfast.
It is a great way of keeping everyone entertained and engaged while they wait. The magician will mix and mingle around the guests performing close up magic to each group. We probably get more bookings for close up magic at this point in the wedding than at any other time.
2 - During the Wedding Breakfast
The problem with the Wedding Breakfast is you cannot keep everyone happy with how you have arranged the table plan. Guests will not know each other and realistically there is nothing you can do about this. Table magic is the perfect option and works really well during this section of the wedding.
Basically the magician moves from table to table perform a mini cabaret show to each table. Other than being entertaining this has a couple of benefits. Firstly it acts as a conversation starter or ice breaker at each table. The other positive is that table magic creates anticipation throughout the room. All the other tables will hear the laughter and applause from across the room and then try to be the next table seen. It creates a great atmosphere just before the speeches take place.
3 - During the lull
Traditionally the lull is a very boring time with nothing much happening. It's that time between when the speeches finish and the evening guests start arriving. Most people sit around with nothing to do or go back to their room (if they are staying at the venue).
A lot of our clients have us perform close up magic during this time to keep the energy levels up before the evening guests arrive. It's a great time to have a magician perform and works very well. Many of our clients have us stay on and perform meet and greet magic as the evening guests arrive as well.

4 - During the evening reception
Although not as popular as the other options this is still something we get booked for. The idea is that we go round during the evening reception performing table magic to all the guests. The problem is if you do this you need to get the timings correct.
There is no point us performing magic whilst there is a wedding singer or a band on as everyones attention will be on the band. Therefore this either needs to be at the beginning of the night as guests arrive or slotted in-between other entertainment. The other option is we perform magic in a second room away from where the main entertainment is taking place. A lot of people do not like loud music and will leave the room when it is on. By having us positioned in a separate room we can entertain the guests that leave. CLICK HERE to see our blog on Wedding Entertainment- An honest comparison!
My personal favourite time to perform is during the wedding breakfast but that is just personal preference. More than likely you will have an idea in your head as to which time would be best. However feel free to contact me either over the phone or visiting my website (www.slightlyunusual.co.uk). I would be happy to run through the various options and help you decide which one is best.
